Streetheart Back In YYC

Written By: Charles Hope

The sold out show started out with the well know Streeheart staple “Action” setting the tone for a rocking night, a challenging tune which singer Paul McNair,

(https://www.facebook.com/paul.mcnair.3388/ ) handled masterfully. Since stepping in to the lead singer roll, it seems the band is unstoppable. Streetheart proceeded to run through the first five songs from their first album, Meanwhile Back in Paris... ( if you are not familiar with this record, I do recommend you check it out as it is jam-packed with great tunes).

The set list seemed to chronologically move through the band's catalogue with “Hollywood”, “Here Comes the Night”, “Tin Soldier”. Ken “Spider” Sinnaeve( https://www.kenspidersinnaeve.com/ ) then took centre stage with a brilliant bass solo accompanied by drummer Brent Fitz( https://www.brentfitz.com/ ).

Mr Fitz was a great addition to the band on this night. I thought his playing was exceptional, and the drum sound was so strong that it enhanced the already great sound mix.

Moving from solo into “Teenage Rage” and “Trouble” gave the beefy guitar sound of Jeff Neill ( https://www.instagram.com/surrealneill/?hl=en ) a chance to shine. Jeff is a dynamic guitarist and always worth the price of admission. “ Miss Plaza Suite” grows in dynamics and is a classic Streeheart song in my humble opinion(for what it is worth). This song highlights keyboardist Daryl Gutheil , giving him a chance to shine on the keys and with his voice. A stellar guitar solo from Jeff leading into another solo from Spider.

The crowd was definitely all in at this point where the show goes crazy with all the radio hits “Look in Your Eyes”, “What Kind of Love is This”, “One More Time”, “Snow White” all these had the crowd on their feet and singing along. It was an enjoyable and energetic atmosphere. Closing out the show was their renowned version of “Under My Thumb”, which is always a crowd favourite. After 49 years, it seems Streetheart is as strong as ever with no signs of slowing down. If you have never seen the live show, I think you owe it to yourself to check it out. you will not be disappointed; it is easy to forget how many hits they have.
